Hello. My lower right wisdom tooth is erupting. An X-ray showed that the tooth has to be removed, and a surgeon is needed because the tooth has not emerged from under the gum. That would be fine if my surgery appointment were not three months away! Until now it was still okay, but recently a pus-filled swelling appeared on the gum and the gum is very swollen, so I can barely eat on the right side of my mouth. What could I use to reduce the swelling and get rid of the pus-filled lump and bad breath? Are there any home remedies, or what should I buy at a pharmacy? Would it perhaps be better simply to pay for the operation so that I can be treated sooner? Thank you for your answer!

If the condition you describe bothers you so much that you cannot wait for the operation, I suggest visiting an emergency dental clinic, where the inflammation of the soft periodontal tissues can be calmed with locally applied anti-inflammatory medication. Cleaning and cooling the area certainly helps the situation. We perform the extraction as a private-pay procedure. The price is 90 Eur.

I have an artificial tooth or 'post' on my upper left second premolar. For the last month I have occasionally had a 'twitching' pain. I had an X-ray, and it showed inflammation around the 'post'. Since I have no teeth further back than the premolar on the left side, I would like to know whether there is any other solution apart from an implant (perhaps a partial denture). I am 59 years old.
Kind regards and thank you for your answer!

A partial denture is certainly possible and is the simplest solution, although that does not mean it is the most favourable or optimal one. If you still have all the other teeth, treatment with implants is the most appropriate solution, because the number of remaining teeth is too large for a denture to function successfully in the presence of reduced chewing function.

For more than a month now I have had pain in the gum above the tooth, and the area is also swollen. I would like to know what can be done in this case, because something is obviously happening. The X-ray does not show anything unusual. Thank you for your answer and kind regards.

We can help you in several ways: -repeat root canal treatment is the most basic and conservative solution. Removal of the old root filling, application of medicated dressings and refilling usually require three to four visits. -repeat apicoectomy -removal of the tooth, making a bridge or, preferably, placing an implant are reliable solutions and at the same time remove the focus represented by the affected tooth. We can decide on the type of treatment after a clinical examination and X-ray.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and, before surgery and after consulting the surgeon, I had 3 teeth removed (upper left 7 and 5 and lower left 6) because they had inflammation. Since January 2012 I have been on hormone therapy (Nolvadex for 5 years, Zoladex for 2 years). I am 37 years old.
Recently I visited a dentist because of pain, and the X-ray showed periodontal disease around the remaining teeth (upper left 8, lower left 7, upper right 8, lower right 1). I do not know the stage of the periodontal disease, but my gums have never bled; only around the lower 1 there has been slight gum recession of about 2 mm.
I am currently waiting for tartar removal, followed by scaling and root planing.
My question is this: because of the hormone therapy, can I ever be a suitable candidate for implants, and when after periodontal treatment (if at all) could this be done? Would bone augmentation also be necessary in this case? How should I mention the possibility of implants to my dentist?
Thank you for your answer.

Implants can be placed at the sites where your teeth were removed some time ago, provided the anatomical conditions allow it (we need an X-ray for diagnosis). We certainly aim for the mouth to be clean before such procedures (free of calculus and plaque and acute inflammation). Treatment of periodontal disease itself is usually spread over a longer period of time (it is treatment of chronic inflammation) and requires ongoing patient monitoring, so implantation at the previously mentioned sites can nevertheless be started. Bone augmentation is related to insufficient anatomical conditions, which can be diagnosed before the procedure using X-rays.

I would also like to know whether, after implant placement, the patient receives some replacement for the missing tooth. Is the temporary replacement included in the price or is there an additional charge? How much?
If I decide to have 3 implants with you, can I receive a discount? How much? If one implant is placed/restored each month, is a discount possible in that case?
Thank you for your answers and kind regards,
Jure

Dear Sir/Madam! Implant treatment is certainly the best solution in the case described, because the lateral incisors are not overloaded. This would not, however, avoid the need for preparation of the lateral incisors (they already carry crowns as part of the bridge). Prices for this case: -750 Eur (implant) X 2 = 1500 Eur. -420 Eur (crown on implant) X 2 = 840 Eur. Approximately three months after implant placement, crowns can be fitted to them; for this we need another two visits within one week. During the interim period you are aesthetically restored with a temporary prosthetic replacement, which is included in the price stated above. Have a nice day!
