Hello.
This week, specifically on Tuesday, I had a wisdom tooth extracted. It took quite a long time because almost the entire tooth was under the gum. After about an hour, I think, the tooth was finally out. I have one stitch in the gum and one stitch in the cheek. The swelling still has not gone down, although I use cold compresses, but I am more worried that my entire jaw hurts. On Thursday I went back to the surgeon, who examined the wound and said there was no inflammation and nothing was “draining”, but I am afraid that something else may be wrong because I am in a lot of pain and take two Nalgesin forte tablets at a time. Could you please advise me what to do? Thank you in advance.
Dentist Tomaž Rotar answers:
Dear Sir/Madam!
The procedure described is usually very aggressive and requires extensive removal of the surrounding bone; in addition, the mandibular nerve lies in the immediate vicinity of the apex of a lower wisdom tooth. Even slight pressure on its canal can cause severe pain throughout its distribution (the lower jaw). After such and similar procedures we always advise intensive cooling (compresses, ice cream) for at least a few hours after the procedure and also later if severe inflammation is present. We can additionally prescribe pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medicines (Naklofen, Nalgesin...) and, in the case of wound infection (enlarged local lymph nodes, elevated body temperature), also an antibiotic. If pain persists for a longer period (one month) and the wound and surrounding tissues show no signs of inflammation or infection, the cause of the pain is probably elsewhere: nerve injury, neuralgia...
Have a nice day!
