Hello,
I would like to know how long, on average, a tooth restored with a root post and a ceramic crown lasts. I have one such tooth (first premolar) that will need to be repaired in this way. Is this a good solution (the tooth has been without a nerve for several years, and now part of it broke off together with the filling), or would you recommend something else as well (perhaps an implant)?
Thank you for your answer and kind regards,
Andrej
Dentist Tomaž Rotar answers:
Dear Sir!
Treatment of the tooth you describe certainly includes the procedures you have mentioned and, in this case, they are also the only solution. When a tooth no longer has enough of its own hard tissues forming the dental crown, it needs to be restored with a root post and an artificial crown. The longevity of the restoration depends primarily on the health of the periodontal tissues, namely the bone and periodontal ligament, which is of course also conditioned by the quality of the previous root canal treatment (already completed in your case). The prosthodontic restoration itself (crown and post) is made of material that does not decay or dissolve... Each restoration also has its own guarantee (crown and post: 7 years).
If the tooth had to be extracted, implant placement would be an option and is certainly a better solution than loading both neighbouring teeth by making a conventional bridge.
Have a nice day!
